The Week That Was

A few random thoughts to close out the week . . .

If you looked at the faces in the crowd that jammed into Chicago's Grant Park on Tuesday night to hear Barack Obama give his victory speech, the historical significance of his achievement in terms of a civil rights milestone could not escape you.

But this is no time to fly onto the deck of the aircraft carrier and declare "mission accomplished!" There is still a lot of prejudice and bigotry out there that is yet to be conquered.

* * *

And speaking of prejudice, was there anyone who was a more unwilling and unwitting accomplice to the passage of Proposition 8 than San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome? The constant use of his growling voice heralding the State Supreme Court's recognition of gay marriage; "whether you like it or not!" on TV and radio ads surely must have fired up the fundamentalists and religious conservatives to get out and vote to ban same-sex marriage.

* * *

Among those in this town who have a platform for their opinions, is there anyone who is more prejudiced and bigoted than Daily Sound columnist Gina Perry? Her column bashing gay people and anyone else who opposed Proposition 8 proved one other thing about her, she's ignorant.

* * *

Three days after Barack Obama is elected president, the politician that is making headlines for for advocating a tax hike is California's Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I'll be more enthusiastic about sitting through another multi-day hearing over whether Wendy McCaw's News-Press committed additional unfair labor practices, if there is a final decision by then on McCaw's appeal of the last hearing.
