The Yin and The Yang of Prize Winners

Through the miracle of Al Gore's great invention, the Internet, I was able to take a look at Sunday's front page of the News-Press despite the fact that I'm 3,000 miles away in New York City.

On it was a nice picture of this year's winners of the paper's Lifetime Achievement Award together with Wendy and Arthur, the paper's "co-publishers."

It struck me as ironic that one's reward for a lifetime of service to the community is having to stand and pose with the two-time winners of the town's booby prize for running one of its most respected institutions into the ground.

I must say though that for the second year in a row old Wendy looked pretty radiant in the picture. Either she's a lot more relaxed than she was at the NLRB hearings or the graphic arts department at the News-Press invested in the super deluxe edition of Photoshop.

According to the accompanying caption the entertainment at this year's award dinner, held Saturday evening at the Bacara, was supplied by comedian David Brenner.

I guess that's to insure there will be no awkward moments where the conversation lags; "So how much has circulation really fallen off?"

The caption also identified Christine Emmons as the "wife of honoree Robert Emmons" and failed to note that she was an honoree in her own right

Management at the local unemployment office might be well advised to add extra staff to handle the fallout from that mistake.

That's all for now. I have sights to see
