A "New Sheriff" In The Newsroom?

Just got word of a major new hire at the News-Press.

Don Katich, who used to work at KEYT in news production, and most recently has been a real estate agent in town with Prudential California, has been hired as "Director of Newsroom Operations."

According to an article posted on the News-Press website "Mr. Katich will be responsible for integrated newsgathering operations for all of the Ampersand media platforms including the Santa Barbara News-Press, newspress.com, radio station KZSB AM 1290 and affiliated community publications."

My sources tell me that in the newsroom pecking order, associate editor Scott Steepleton will continue to be the top dog. Katich will be next in rank under him and above assistant city editor James Zoltak.

(BTW, that means with three reporters in the newsroom, the ratio of editors to reporters at the News-Press is one-to-one.)

Katich has for many years been the producer of telethons at KEYT, even after he left his full-time job there. He has produced the annual Christmas Unity Telethon after it left KEYT and moved to an Internet netcast on News-Press TV.

He has also written at least one op-ed page column regarding the changes at KEYT which has appeared in the News-Press.
