Although she complained in the May 1 layoff memo about the "significant economic resources" she was forced to expend litigating with the Teamsters Union, Wendy McCaw still must like going to court. Word is that the News-Press owner is very eager to sue the producers of Citizen McCaw. Apparently, this is in spite of not having seen the movie.
At least one attorney has reportedly told her that she has no case. Presumably she will be shopping around for second, third and fourth opinions.
Norman Colavincenzo, identified in the current issue of Pacific Coast Business Times as being the chief financial officer of the News-Press, told the Business Times reporter that News-Press management was analyzing the most recently released circulation numbers. "From September through March, we've seen a solid formation of our subscriber base," he said, describing the results as "encouraging."
So encouraging that two days after he gave the reporter that quote the paper laid off 10 of it's staff.
Perhaps we should start calling Norm "the spin doctor."
And just how many people are still employed by the News-Press these days? Most people I've talked to who might know, peg the number of people still working there as being in the range of 100 to 130. In June of 2006, the number of people employed by the paper is thought to have been around 240.
