Just Another Thursday In Paradise

Another News-Press reporter has said "see ya!"

Today is the last day on the job for Joe Melendez, a temporary employee. Melendez is returning home to New Jersey. His departure means only three reporters assigned to cover hard news stories on the south coast remain at the News-Press. Of course Nora Wallace, still covers north county for the paper.

Can a month go by without the Teamsters Union filing an unfair labor practice charge against the News-Press? Well, at least we know that February won't pass without one being filed.

Yesterday the union announced that it is accusing the paper of discontinuing annual pay raises to newsroom employees in 2006 in retaliation for the employees voting to unionize.

Maybe News-Press owner Wendy McCaw not talking to anybody isn't such a bad idea after all.

Here's Sam Zell, owner of Tribune Co., talking to his troops at the Orlando Sentinel recently. And consider yourself warned, he drops the "F-bomb" at the end of the video.

And yes, if you've been getting those phone calls from telemarketers asking if you want to re-start your cancelled subscription to the News-Press you're not alone.

The calls are coming from an outfit in Minnesota which specializes in telemarketing on behalf of news periodicals.

According to one of the former News-Press subscribers who received one of these calls, when she pointed out that she had previously asked to have her number placed on a "do not call" list she was told the company had received it on a CD sent to them by the News-Press.

I don't know if it's the most popular blog on latimes.com but Kareem Abdul Jabbar's blog has got to be the most heavily flogged. He's getting some nice in-house ads in the print edition of the paper promoting his blog.

And how did he end up writing a blog for The Times? The inside scoop is found here.
