Sam Zell, who recently completed his acquisition of Tribune, Co., which owns The L.A. Times and the Chicago Tribune, has recently decreed that Tribune employees shall have full access to the entire Internet while at work.
"I do not see how a member of the Fourth Estate, dedicated to protecting the First Amendment, can censor what its own employees and partners can see," said Zell in a memo to Tribune employees.
Is News-Press owner Wendy McCaw listening? "Dedicated to protecting the First Amendment." What a quaint concept for a newspaper publisher!
As you may know, computers at the News-Press are blocked from accessing certain websites including Blogabarbara, The Independent, Edhat and (surprise) Craig Smith's Blog.
Last week I taped an appearance on poet, playwright, and musician David Starkey's show, "The Creative Community" which is seen on The Santa Barbara Channels.
The series is a video archive of Santa Barbara's writers, poets, artists, musicians, actors, and filmmakers. (Boy, how did I ever make the cut?) Anyway, on the program where I was a guest we talk about, among other things, The News-Press, new media, and of course, blogging.
Here's a brief excerpt.
